I work with chidlren, adolescents, and teenagers every day. We work on goal setting in so many formats- Precision Teaching Aims to earn a token reinforcer, goals for what to accomplish in one class period, and goals for the entire first quarter of school. Coming up with new ways for students to set goals, track progress towards goals, and then reinforce successful goal completion is so easy for me. Where I fall short is setting goals for myself and actually following through, tracking data, and providing my own reinforcement.
Professionally, I've set a goal to re-read Skinner's book "About Behaviorism" before reading anything else for fun. I love to read so taking away leisure reading for more 'studying' should have made it quick and freed up a lot of time! I took the book to the pool the other day, to the gym, you name it. I'm doing terribly! Now I'm just reading less overall. So- my new plan is to set a goal for how many pages per day to read. I started too big and needed instead to set smaller objectives, or daily aims. We'll see how this goes!
Personally, I've set a weight loss goal and am tracking progress towards it by charting my weight once each week. I also get a happy face on our family calendar in the kitchen for every 30 minutes I work out a day. Everyone who comes over knows what the happy faces mean and my friends offer praise when they see lots of them on the calendar.
I'm clearly more motivated in my personal life with a weight loss goal than with a professional goal. I need to up the ante and increase my reinforcement for sticking to my goal to re-read "About Behaviorism". Any good reinforcer ideas?
